As a professional who has worked from home in some capacity since 2007, these are my top 3 recommended work from home job websites.
The most frustrating thing about looking for work at home opportunities is wasting time clicking on those waste your time opportunities disguised as legitimate work from home jobs. We've all made the mistake of being fooled into some Network Marketing scheme or sales job that baited us in with its too-good-to-be-true language and cost us a few minutes and maybe for some of us, a few months of effort just to lose time and money we can't get back. Check out my list here to avoid falling into those traps in the future. My specialty is helping people convert their current jobs into work from home jobs, but if you're looking for a brand new gig, below are my top recommendations to find jobs that have been properly screened and are 100% legitimate...no sales calls, products to purchase, "classes" to attend...just the skills you already have. More than 90% of these opportunities come with benefits and 401k's.
1. THE CREAM OF THE CROP
This is my number one go to website to help people find work from home jobs. Flexjobs has a team that works with hundreds of employers to screen jobs and make sure meet 3 requirements.
1. They're jobs for professionals. These jobs aren't just for college grads (there are many that require high school diplomas), but they do require that you have, or are willing to develop, a certain amount of skills. The opportunities are geared toward career oriented individuals.
2. They have flexible options. There is no cookie cutter way to achieve the schedule that works for you. Flexjobs offers access to freelance jobs, travel jobs, alternative schedules (2nd shift, etc...), as well as full time remote opportunities.
3. They're high quality. You won't find any ads, junk jobs, or spam when exploring these opportunities.
The Pros
1. You can take tests that prove out your skills on the website. Once you've completed the tests, you can choose to display them on your profile to make you more attractive to potential employers.
2. This job board has many more opportunities than any other remote work job board I've discovered.
3. The advanced search options and notifications option make it easy to stay on top of new opportunities.
The Cons
1. This website is not free. It requires you to pay a monthly fee for access, which I think is totally worth it because of the sheer volume of opportunities to explore. If you're in the job market, a 3-month membership or even a 1-month membership could be enough to connect you with the right employer.
2. You can't apply directly from the site. All opportunity links redirect you to the employer website and once you've applied, you have to manually indicate it by going back to the Flexjobs site. A minor, but somewhat annoying, feature.
2. THE EMPLOYER INFLUENCER
The focus at Werk is to reach out to employers and help them to create more flexible work environments based on the needs of employees so that they can attract top talent. Werk does tons of research to determine the real needs of workers and on the other end shares those results with employers and the result is lots of opportunities that have been created to cater to YOU the job seeker. Amazing concept in my opinion.
The Pros
1. Amazing opportunities. Werk works really hard to create ideal opportunities so you will find those high status jobs you might be looking for here.
2. Access to the research. This is a good place to check the pulse of the remote job world. Werk is very open with their findings and checking out job opportunities can expose you to the companies that are on board and value their employees' time and energy. Even if you don't see something that's right for you on the site, you can explore the companies and reach out to them directly.
3. It's Free! As a job seeker you get access to opportunities for free along with regular email updates.
The Cons
1. Not a ton of opportunities to choose from. This is not necessarily a bad thing if quality is what you're seeking over quantity, but just something to note.
2. This site also redirects to the employer website which makes the application process a little less convenient than sites like LinkedIn.
3. THE OLDIE BUT GOODIE
This might be a surprise to some but Indeed is a great resource for legitimate work from home jobs, but there is a catch. If you google "indeed work from home jobs", the first that will pop up are the "opportunities" you want to avoid. The secret is to use the search criteria to narrow things down to legitimate opportunities which are plentiful if you know what to click. I love the fact that you can also narrow by salary so you know what you're getting yourself into financially before investing time into the application process.
Pros
1. Variety. You can apply for both traditional and remote positions using the profile you set up and the resume and cover letter you upload.
2. There's an app. You can search and apply on the go.
3. You can focus on the money. I can't stress enough how nice it is to be able to sort by salary. Although people would like to think that money shouldn't be the most important thing....it literally is :-). If we didn't need it...and certain amounts of it, this article wouldn't even be necessary.
Cons
1. You've got to sort through the illegitimate stuff. Again, make sure to properly set your search criteria and check out my article on work from home opportunities to avoid to find out what to look out for.
2. It's hard to stand out. Indeed is an extremely popular site and you will be one of many applicants, especially for coveted, high-paying, work from home jobs. You've got to make sure you do what's necessary to stand out to employers and get seen. Indeed also has a feature that allows you to see how many other applicants are interested in the position so that you can see just what you're up against.
Although there are thousands of illegitimate opportunities out there, with knowledge of the right resources, it is surprisingly easy to find something that fits your skills and you schedule and also provides the security of jobs with more traditional schedules.
